About

I am a writer, poet, and translator. I was born in Poland and moved to Scotland in mid-noughties. I write in Polish and in English. I started writing in English in my early twenties and since then I have been fascinated by the idea of writing in a foreign language. As a European writer living in Edinburgh, I am interested in the ideas of cultural and linguistic displacement, in the ways the layers of languages are reflected in everyday communication through the polyphony of voices. I hold an MA degree in English Philology from Jagiellonian University in Kraków, an MA degree in Creative Writing (Distinction) from Lancaster University, and a PhD in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow. I am the recipient of the Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award 2022 for poetry, the Hawthornden Writing Fellowship, the Gillian Purvis Award for New Writing, the Alexander and Dixon Bursary, and the Erasmus Scholarship. My fiction submission was highly commended in the Emerging Writer Bridge Award competition. My poetry submission received special commendation in the Oxford Brookes International Poetry Competition 2022 and in the Verve Eco-Poetry Competition 2024.

I have worked as an interpreter and a translator for many years. You can find examples of my work on the Translation page. I am available to provide English to Polish and Polish to English translation and interpreting services.

I have also designed and run creative writing workshops in Edinburgh and Glasgow and I am available to facilitate workshops and events both in English and Polish. Among others, I have collaborated with the Scottish Poetry Library and hosted events on poetry in translation at the Scottish Poetry Library and the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

I am an experienced English teacher and comparative literature tutor. I have taught in various language schools in Poland and Scotland and at the University of Glasgow.

In Polish my surname is Masłowska, but in English I spell it Maslowska to avoid confusion.
